The Former President's Regime of Consequences and Incentives

The ex-president's insatiable urge for payback has swiftly transformed into a methodical apparatus. During the twelve months, the leader's anger and whims have taken on the form of government actions in ways analogous to historical repressive regimes. Federal personnel who fail to comply are immediately dismissed and substituted by devotees. Opposing officials who challenge him face prosecution, court proceedings and punishment. Adversaries have been designated under administration orders as “unpatriotic”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with legal action as “terrorists”.

Federal Agencies Remade

Each case involving targeting of political opponents and immunity for loyalists demonstrates its own distinct characteristics. Yet, regardless of their individual form, they embody examples of what has emerged as a calculated method. Those episodes are far from coincidental. The administration's cleansing of DoJ attorneys and FBI officials, alongside his installation of loyalists in key roles, commenced rapidly, promptly took on a consistency, and has now been molded into a regime. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been remade into partisan bodies under Trump's explicit command to execute his demands. Unfairness has been rendered normal. It represents the retribution system.

Management is focused with punishing the President's alleged adversaries than they are with defending our public welfare.

Within the Structure

The foundation of this mechanism has been revealed in the legal complaint of several previous top FBI executives lodged in late summer in the US district court in DC against agency head a senior appointee and justice department head another official for wrongful dismissal in “a effort of revenge against Plaintiffs for what Defendants deemed to be a refusal to demonstrate adequate devotion”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the previous interim leader, describes a exchange in which the director “openly admitted the illegality of his conduct”.

Driscoll had attempted to defend agency personnel from being fired, the complaint claims. He informed him that “administration officials” – perceived by him to be the presidential administration and justice department – had directed him to remove anyone who they identified as having been involved in a criminal investigation against Trump. The document adds: “He stated that he had to fire the personnel his leaders told him to remove, because his chance to keep his own role depended on the removal of the agents who worked on investigations involving the President. He noted that there was no way he or him could do to stop these or any other firings, because ‘the FBI attempted to place the leader in prison and he hasn't forgotten it.’” When Driscoll advised him he was breaking the bureau's own policies, the director supposedly said “he knew that and he was aware the essence of the summary firings were almost certainly unlawful”.

Broad Consequences

Following the director's alleged confession to Driscoll, the DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been gutted and repurposed for the administration's retribution system. Multiple of the FBI's high-ranking agents were dismissed or compelled to leave in the early weeks of the presidency. About thousands of professional attorneys at the department have agreed to a “early exit scheme”. No fewer than several government attorneys, such as those in the Manhattan division, quit in objection over what they viewed as partisan influence in dropping the legal action against the New York City mayor, the mayor, in as a trade for his cooperation with the administration's ICE arrests of migrants. The public integrity section of the justice department, which oversees ethical violations, has been diminished to minimal staff. The equality section has been devastated: 70% of its staff has left. One-third of executives at DoJ have resigned. The section upholding ecological regulations has lost half its management.

Incentives and Penalties

In the Adams case, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, the official, resigned in protest against what she described as the “trade-off”. Tom Homan, the president's “enforcement chief,” showed up as the enforcer with him on a media outlet to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I'll reappear in New York City.”. Additionally, a former official, previously the justice department figure and a ex-lawyer, who brokered the deal, was awarded an court role, a possible stepping stone to the judicial branch.

Trump's exemption for wrongdoings committed while in office, awarded by the extraordinary judgment of the conservative on the supreme court, thus blocking his prosecution over the January 6 insurrection and safeguarding his public standing for the 2024 election, is the foundation stone on which he relies to shield his loyalists. Under these circumstances, he has been freed to enable corruption. The effect of the court judgment permeates his government and the Republican Party down to its bones. The legal case has spread. In the words of the former president's White House counsel he commented about the Watergate
