The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
