Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
