In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
