RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
